Before this blog gets closed and forgotten in the coming semesters, i just wana say that it's been a journey or rather more of an adventure which had its fair share of ups and downs. This sounds very emotional so i'll get straight to the point. I learnt alot taking this module. At least i've made contact with more friends and gotten more familiar with the different media tools and applications. Such applications and tools that i've used to produce the individual as well group pieces include:
ADOBE:
Photoshop
Illustrator
Dreamweaver
MAC:
iMovie
iMovie HD
iDVD
Logic Pro
I'll end of this post by showing our final project videos which are promotional pieces for NUS as well as its CNM department.

Assignment 6: Superhero Video Effect
For this assignment, we were required to do a video about someone who has supernatural powers and i came up with a concept about how this man has the power to control mother nature and he unleashes different weather elements on his victim who is a smoker. He has a distaste for being around smokers.
I searched the net and got a little inspiration from the pictures i found of smokers. At first i wanted for the location of the video to be at a bus stop but thereafter decided against it, hence the pictures of bus stops as well.
Some pictures of bus stops:
Random 1:

Random 2:

Bus stop with lady smoker:

Smoker:

Flicking action:

Anger and frustration at the inconsiderate smoker:

Perplexed expression:

(The sequence of the pictures are in order)
This was the initial storyboard that i came up with. In the end i didn't stick to it.
Storyboard:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FRAME 1: Wallie walks to a bus stop to wait for his bus.
FRAME 2: A stranger also walks to the bus stop.
FRAME 3: He takes out his cigarette to smoke.
FRAME 4: Wallie is irritated by the smoke and shows signs of disgust.
FRAME 5: Wallie freezes time and proceeds to take the man’s cigarettes and throws them into the dustbin.
FRAME 6: Wallie unfreezes time and continues to wait for his bus. Stranger is perplexed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wanted to bring a personal perspective to the video because i'm an ex-smoker and have successfully kicked the habit for 14 months. I can no longer stand the smell of the smoke and i hate being around smoke, it's not that i have a hatred for smokers, it's just the smoke and the smell of it that i can't stand.
Therefore i came up with such a concept and i filmed this within the confines of my room and some of the props i used were of course a cigar, that was bought by a close friend of mine whom i used to smoke with but i quit before having the chance to smoke it, my own basketball cap and a jacket. It's a pretty simple video and this is what i came up with.

Assignment 4: Pre-production Presentation
For this assignment, we were required to present a pre-production document for our NUS promotional video and basically i just converted the powerpoint file to a quicktime movie and here it is.
Our script:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOY1 sits, having lunch at a café.
GIRL stands at a traffic light junction and waits for light to turn green.
BOY2 stands in a shop, browses items.
Boy1 sips coffee. AGENT1 and AGENT2, well dressed men in black suits, peer around a corner. Agent1 points and shouts at boy1. Boy1 gets up, pushes chair onto the floor and runs off.
Light changes colour.
Girl begins to cross. Agent1 and agent2 turn up on the other side of the road. Girl realizes and turns in the other direction to run away from agents.
Boy2 drops items and runs out of the front door of the shop. Agents follow suit.
Boy1 runs along corridor, followed by agents.
Girl runs down a road, followed by agents.
Boy2 runs across a road, almost getting run down by a car but runs around the front. Agents enter through the rear door and slide through to the other side.
Boy1 poses as a mannequin at a cloth store. Agents run past. Boy1 runs in the opposite direction. Agents run after him.
Girl peers around pillar.
Boy2 runs past. Girl turns to look behind. Boy1 runs past. Girl runs off. Agents run past.
Boy1 runs into alley. Agent2 pins him up against wall. Agent1 holds up a wallet.
Boy2 is similarly subdued by agent1. Agent2 opens a wallet and pulls out a card.
Agent2 is on the phone.
Agent1 holds a matriculation card.
Agent2
We’ve got her.
Agent1 is on the phone.
Agent1
We’ve got him.
Agents hold boy1 and boy2’s matriculation cards.
Text
Every day, dozens of NUS students get headhunted by various organizations. Not for the faint of heart.

Assignment 2: A Day in the University
This assignment required us to depict a typical day in university, including the sights and sounds that make up a student's daily experience on campus. I took a couple of pictures of various locations around campus, including the bukit timah law campus to showcase a variety of scenic spots which encompassed pictures of buildings, monuments and the natural landscape.
Here are some shots i took of the locations and which i used for the website.
To represent a buzz of activity:
Some bazaar at science faculty

I also wanted to incorporate aspects of campus life such as the routine commutes, the long flights of stairs and the buzz of activity that are typical of NUS and therefore i took pictures which represented these elements.
The final looks like this:

Assignment 3: Ken Burns Effect
NUS:
For the NUS video, i wanted to showcase the different venues of NUS and to give a sense of what students see and experience everyday.
The concept i came up with was to place a figurine at different spots on campus as i felt taking pictures with a real person was a rather cliche concept. And so these are the locations i came up with.
Library (A VERY central part of education here):

Computer Lab in the library:

A park near the NUS Forum:

A corridor along the Arts and Social Sciences faculty:

A random bush (to give a sense that NUS has greenery):

Recycling bins:

Canteen at the Arts faculty:

Here's the final video for this one:
CNM:
The concept i came up with for the CNM video was similar, just that i used a different figurine this time. I wanted to portray the figurine having different personalities or personas to promote the CNM department as a department that welcomes students from any background, without any discrimination and that CNM provides a very intercultural and cosmopolitan environment for students to excel in.
I chose these locations for my shots.
Library:

Park:

Smoking corner (one of the many):

Stairs:

Forum area:

Carpark near LT11:

Deck:

Olio Cafe:

Another carpark:

Assignment 1 continued...
This was what the current Media Development Lab website (main page) looks like:

This is our rendition of the webbie:

We brainstormed for ideas and what hit us was the idea that MDL should be portrayed as media hub where students can interact with all forms of media, be it old or new, and we envisioned it like a little world on its own, a diverse city which also functions as a common ground for media enthusiasts to share about media.
We thus came up with some banners and headers:

This was used more of a filler to fill up empty white spaces,

and Headers,

For the design process we took into account these elements:
1.Design Principle
2.Theme
3.Typeface
4.Grids
5.Colour scheme
6.Other design elements- graphics
1.Design Principle
-colour harmony among NUS orange, black, white and shades of gray.
- Rule of thirds
- Minimalist
2.Theme
-Appear professional with urban minimalistic feel to incorporate the MDL functions within FASS.
3.Typeface
-Font family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif
4. Grids

5. Colour Scheme

6. Other design elements
We designed a few other graphic elements to incorporate our colour scheme as well as symbols which represents new media such as,
The microphone which represents the audio aspect of media

The cassette player, or the various media players that are out in the market today,

The tablet, which is essential for graphic artists,

Lighting, an important aspect of video recording,

Some other graphics that we designed:

We also re-organised the layout of the webpage and the position of its elements,

The menu was redesigned as well,
Current Menu:

Our rendition:

We condensed the equipment loans page to create a more concise categorisation of the different types of equipment available for loaning.

Our design:

We also condensed the tutorials into direct links so that users can download them directly onto their desktop.
